Arcade fire: We used to wait (The Wilderness Downtown) : HTML5 experiment

Arcade fire have recently launched an innovative experiment using HTML5. Entitled The 'The Wilderness Downtown' the multi-view interactive windows play out a video based on information from Google Maps, using your home postcode you can watch an eerie video made up of recognisable images.

"These modern web technologies have helped us craft an experience that is personalised and unique for each viewer, as you virtually run through the streets where you grew up," said Thomas Gayno, Google Creative Lab.

Visit Arcade Fire's website to view it for yourself. It's pretty impressive for an experimental video, who knows what will come next as HTML5 becomes mainstream.

Andreas Samuelsson : Profile

Just came across Andreas Samuelsson's website, check it out! There's so many cool images on there, worth taking a look.

"Andreas Samuelsson is a visual artist based in Göteborg, Sweden. He was born 1978 in Linköping, Sweden. He graduated from Berghs School of Communication in Stockholm, 2004 and has since then working on freelance basis. His works covers designs for magazines, posters, t-shirts, textiles, wallpapers and advertising. He has also been involved in various art projects and several group exhibitions. He curated a typographic charity project called "Animalphabet" during 2007-09 to support Unicef."

Diaspora : The next Facebook?

A new alternative to Facebook is edging over the horizon, with it's launch date set for 15th September. It's called Diaspora and was developed by a rather clever bunch from New York (see image below - complete with blackboard!).

Due to Facebook's recent bashing this year on privacy settings, Diaspora may just have a chance! It will certainly gain a lot of interest in the coming weeks as more is revealed about it's new functions and how it really works.

So far it's all a little vague, but here's a statement from the guys:

"We have Diaspora working, we like it, and it will be open-sourced on September 15th.

"We are spending a good chunk of time concentrating on building clear, contextual sharing. That means an intuitive way for users to decide, and not notice deciding, what content goes to their coworkers and what goes to their drinking buddies."

Looking forward to seeing it working!

Slightly bullshitty video from the creators of Diaspora but it kind of gives you a clue as to what it's all about...

The Mégane Experiment : Can a car change a town?

Mégane have recently launched a campaign called 'Can a car change a town?' and drove a Renault Mégane from Menton, the pearl of France to Gisburn, Lancashire.

The idea revolves around the worrying 'fact' that there are no Méganes in Gisburn and so Claude drives there to convince villagers he is a ‘joie de vivre’ expert from Menton, Côte d’Azur, France, where there are many Méganes.

Over the course of the week, he calls a meeting to explain that villages and towns with more Méganes have higher fertility rates, berates the locals for their lack of ‘joie’, convinces the proprietor of the White Bull to convert his pub to the ‘Boeuf Blanc’ complete with an accordion player, teaches the meaning of ‘joie de vivre’ to the primary school, gets interviewed by a member of the local Press and, finally, puts on the ‘Festival de Joie’ on the local playing fields.

Take a look at TheMeganeExperiment.com to find out more, and to discover how much ‘joie’ there is in your area!

More Mégane videos can be discovered on the Facebook fanpage and the commercials the YouTube channel.

Dalton Ghetti : Pencil Tip Micro Sculptures

These unbelievable graphite micro sculptures were created by Dalton Ghetti, a professional carpenter working on these pencils as a side project. He has been perfecting the art of micro graphite sculpting for the last 25 years. Using a razor blade, sewing needle, a sculpting knife these sculptures can take anywhere between a few months to a few years to finish.

As you can imagine, many of the pencil sculptures have broken over the years, Dalton keeps them in what he calls 'The Cemetery Collection' - I'm sure these alone would be an impressive sight! Amazingly he has never sold any of his pieces and only given away to friends as gifts.

As spotted by Megan on Kronikle.

Vintage Tokyo Subway Posters

An amazing set of vintage subway posters from Tokyo. From what I can gather people in Tokyo are rather strongly against chewing gum on the floor, umbrellas (just in general), smoking on the subway, sumo wrestling on dotted lines and Hilter taking up too much space on their seats.
