Weird and Wonderful Alternative Homes in London

Looking to move to London and want something a little different? Why settle for the norm when living in the country's capital? There are many flats to rent in London, but not so many quite like these four.

Perhaps you'd be interested in living in this 134 feet long riveted steel lightship? Which can be found in London Docks. From the outside you wouldn't expect this old ship was a converted home inside. The interior is stripped back and rough, almost having the look of a filmset.

Then of course there's London's famous Container City, a collection of buildings created from re-used shipping containers. If you've looking for property for sale in London then maybe a container is the right option for you! They can come in all sorts of shapes and sizes built to fit you.

How about The Thin House located in Thurloe Square, Knightsbridge?!

Or perhaps London's smallest house, located in 10 Hyde Park Place, Marble Arch. Squeezed between two others, this property was thought to have been built to block a right of way to St George's graveyard to deter grave robbers.

So go ahead and look up some estate agents London and start thinking outside the box! Ok so maybe you won't move into a converted ship, but there's got to be more out there than the standard 4 walls.

Céleste Boursier-Mougenot: The Curve

Trained as a musician and composer, French artist Céleste Boursier-Mougenot creates works by drawing on the rhythms of daily life to produce sound in unexpected ways. His installation for The Curve will take the form of a walk-though aviary for a flock of zebra finches, furnished with electric guitars and other instruments and objects. As the birds go about their routine activities, perching on or feeding from the various pieces of equipment, they create a captivating, live soundscape.

This great exhibition is coming to it's end this month so hurry if you want to see it! See the Barbican website for more details.

London Underground Shower Curtain - From Izola Shower

This London Underground shower curtain would be a great addition to any bathroom. You can have a shower whilst admiring the iconic map, originally designed by Henry Beck back in 1933, Mr Beck may not have expected this turn of events but I think it's a great new use for the design!

It would also be a great item if you're a rather busy city worker looking for a time saving device, plan a new route to work while you're scrubbing up! The curtain is designed by the guys at Izola Shower, here's how they describe it;

"Navigate the Underground from your bathroom or just pay homage to London's iconic transit system with this unique 12-color reproduction".

The site is in US dollars but the cost is automatically converted to sterling. This curtain costs £30 (depending on exact UK location).

The Design London blog aims to provide information on all aspects of UK design activities. As a graphic designer working in London my main focus is on content in this field, but you never know, from time to time I could be lead off track and down some long and winding bramble bushed track. Only to find at the other end that it wasn’t quite what I was expecting and have to clamber all the way back up the hill and gaze down on the journey I had taken thinking to myself, ‘yeah. not doing that again’.
